Newsmakers 2009

So many people and events made the news both in our country and internationally this 2009. There were many celebrity deaths, scandalous political alliances, sex scandals, celebrated marriages, babies, unwanted pregnancies, and of course, adulterous affairs.

The most recent affairs that whose elements were shredded by the media were that of two sports legends–both in golf and boxing. And that would be Tiger Woods and our very own Manny Pacquiao. Tiger Woods’ marriage to Elin Nordegren fell apart after the vehicular accident that he figured in near his home. Thankfully, Pacquiao and wife Jinkee has weathered the recent storm named Krista Ranillo in their lives.

The death of the King of Pop Michael Jackson sent the whole world into mourning. His death shadowed the passing of another Hollywood actress, Farah Fawcett. Patrick Swayze succumbed to cancer too, and in the local scene, Francis Magalona also passed away but his legacy of Francism lives on through his family and friends.

Freedom fighter former President Corazon Aquino also died because of cancer but with her passing came the birth of the Yellow Army and the political career of son Noynoy Aquino was catapulted to the presidential arena. The senator is now campaigning for the highest position in the land with Senator Mar Roxas as his running mate.

Perhaps the most talked about weddings this year are that of Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo and Senator Mar Roxas with Korina Sanchez.

There are the births of the babies of Vina Morales and Angelika dela Cruz whose babies were born around the time I gave birth to mine.

We also remember the death of talent manager to big stars, Douglas Quijano, and director Johnny Delgado.

This was also a big year for Marian Rivera, not only for her career, but for her love life, as she and leading man Dingdong Dantes finally hooked up together, leaving Karylle loveless. Karylle moved to ABS-CBN and found a new lease in her career and in her love life.

But of course, the biggest events are those that took the lives of many people, such as typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng and the Maguindanao Massacre.

I cannot remember everything. But so many things have happened. Looking back, we can only say that our lives are just a speck in eternity. No matter how famous or rich we are, our lives are meaningless without God because when we die, our lives just end there.

Live to the fullest. Live with God in our lives.

Typhoon Pepeng

After Ondoy, now we are going to face Typhoon Pepeng. I can only pray for those in the Luzon area who will be hit the most by the typhoon.

There are some people who are being evacuated but refuse to go. I do hope that they heed the warning of the government and seek higher ground and if possible, secure their belongings, whatever they can. We cannot fool with the magnitude of the wrath of nature and of God.

As a people, I encourage everyone to please say a prayer for our fellowmen and for God’s mercy upon us. Let us also call for national renewal so that everyone will repent and turn back to God. Let us not forget our first love. Let us not forget our Creator.

After the Onslaught of Typhoon Ondoy

After everybody has blogged about Typhoon Ondoy, I am just about to start. Aside from my personal storms, my head was rather empty these past weeks and my heart was so heavy as well to see our fellowmen suffering this way. And this time, the calamity did not just hit the poor. This time, we see both the rich and the poor queuing to get their ration from relief-giving entities. One lesson here, no one is beyond the wrath of nature, or more appropriately the hand of God. Rich or poor, we are all the same where God is concerned–we are all His creation–well, that is, if one believes in God. But since I am writing this and am a believer, I will relate to these calamities as the hand of God against the country.

I will not get spiritual here however. I just want to appreciate the fact that many people went out of their way to help in whatever and however way they can–time, effort, money, used clothing, food, comfort, etc. These are truly our day to day heroes. The sacrificed themselves in order to give and help people who are more needy than them. But another set of people also surfaced–the looters and those taking advantage of the limelight and the situation in order to advance in the political race of 2010. If they become heroes in the eyes of the people in this trying time, then they have the surefire way to win the hearts of the people–and their votes.

Many people have also given of their money in support of noble programs to clean up and rehabilitate flooded areas, as well as to at least temporarily relieve the situations of our hapless fellowmen. I just hope that the entities entrusted with these funds will use them properly and not waste the resources on extravagant gestures.

Our country has experienced another painful tragedy with the loss of lives and the destruction of so much property that is estimated to be P5 billion already. If this is still not reminder enough for all of us to return to God, I don’t know what else will. In this country that claims to be a Christian nation and yet bows down to the holidays of the Muslims and makes the death of a religious cult to be a national holiday, it is no wonder that we are incurring the wrath of God. And why not? We claim to be Christians and worship other gods? The bible says that we cannot serve two masters. Who are we deceiving? The people of God during biblical times experienced so much destruction just because they turned their backs on God. And we are doing it all over again.

We need leaders whose hearts are attuned to God. We need people who love and fear the Lord to lead us. We need people whose morality is based not on worldly standards but on what the Bible says, after all, they swear on oath to serve the people over a bible. In the bible, the Jewish people experienced peace and prosperity when their leader or king was faithful to the Lord. Isn’t that an eye opener?

Let’s think about this.
