HIV Epidemic in Call Centers

The call center agency is the pride of the Arroyo Administration.

But today, even President Arroyo has been alarmed with the seeming rising cases of HIV positive call center agents. Then I thought, what? That means it is no longer safe to work in call centers? How does the virus spread? Through needles? Infected gadgets? Etc?

Gosh I am so naive. Then it was said because of the lifestyle of call center agents. It cannot be denied that many call center agents live a rather liberated lifestyle. Many of them work at night and many of them can already afford a lot of things because of the higher salaries that they earn. Then it dawned on me that the cause of the spread of the HIV among call center agents is promiscuity.

Now, call centers are trying to encourage a more healthy lifestyle among their workers. But really, it will still boil down to what a person thinks is right or wrong. Morality will still play a major part. If people think that casual sex is okay, they will continue to do it. Not even the scare of HIV-AIDS will stop them.

There is the son of acclaimed director Peque Gallaga. Wango Gallaga came out on the news today that he is HIV positive. I remember him as a sweet young boy during the Negros Summer Worshops at the University of St. La Salle almost 2 decades now. Today, I see him on TV as a advocate of safe sex. He said he thought he would find love in sex. He said that he has had more than 50 partners in a span of 3 years. And most of them he found through internet dating or chat sites.

Although new medicines have made HIV not so scary, would you really want to go there? Or would you rather be monogamous and save yourselves a lot of heartache?

Namets!: Ilonggo Digital Film

Hubby and I finally managed to watch Namets! on Tuesday night. We were so curious and excited and we were happy we did.

We thoroughly enjoyed the movie! Well, after all, this was done by professionals. I loved the script, very witty and fast paced, kudos to my former film and photography professor and Palanca Awardee, Vince Groyon. And the movie was successful making us hungry. We had a whole large pizza afterwards, and hubby and I finished the entire plate! Anyway, hubby envied Direk Peque Gallaga’s role–he had no speaking lines and was just practically eating in the whole movie! Oh, the only intelligible thing I heard him say was “Namets!” when he threw that fruit in the pool when Angel Jacob’s character resigned from his employ.

Angel Jacob tried very much to deliver her lines in Ilonggo, and I salute her for that. I just thought that in some scenes, they could have re-shot those where she delivered the lines rather “pitla.” But her acting was pretty good, considering that her experience leans more on the hosting side. And my goodness! She is sooooo thin! And she was eating so much in the movie! Anyway, in relation to this, I wonder if we didn’t have an Ilongga celebrity and why the producers had to have someone from Manila. Angel’s intonation and pronunciation was so far from what we have, despite her efforts. But kudos for trying Angel.

The scene I really enjoyed was where veteran character actor Ronnie Lazaro played a farmer whose family was experiencing poverty and hunger in their farm. He wanted to eat meat, but his son loved their animals so much that even the chicken was named “Leonard.” In the end, the famiy had to eat noodles, like in the Lucky Me commercial. Anyway, I loved how that boy acted out his part! I didn’t know who he was, but just the same congratulations!

The movie is funny and witty and show a lot of things about Bacolod and Negros. I think Vince Groyon should consider taking a post in the Bacolod Tourism Office. I think that this movie did a lot more to show off this city than our government’s programs. Seriously, we should have programs that will show not just MassKara, because it is only an annual festival, but we need to interest people of the adventures that await them here, even if it is merely gastronomic. For this will sustain our tourism industry the whole year through.

And lastly, eventhough I never did like radio dramas in Ilonggo because the Ilonggo language being spoken on air sounds awkward, but the movie wasn’t. I hope it could be dubbed in Tagalog for the appreciation of people all over the country.

P.S. So good of Joel Torre to lend in a hand — as the caveman! Who would have thought….:-D

Namets! — Celebrity Sightings at SM Cinema 3 (Bacolod City)

The Ilonggo digital film “Namets!” premiered last night, Nov. 24, 2008, at the SM Cinema 3 in Bacolod City. It was a star-studded night, with the main characters attending: Angel Jacob, Christian Vasquez, and Peque Gallaga. Monsour del Rosario was there, too, but I am not sure about his participation. I will tell you why. My former film and photography professor and Palanca multi awardee, Vince Groyon, was there, too. He was the screenplaywright But I was shy to approach him. We haven’t seen each other since I have graduated in college. Don’t ask when.

Anyway, we go there around 6:40 for the 7pm screening. We didn’t know it was the premiere and everyone was there. So tickets were sold out. Not wanting to waste our going to SM, we bought a couple of tickets, priced at P70 each, a little expensive than usual, because the movie will benefit Tapulanga Foundation and St. Francis of Assissi. Our schedule was 8:30pm.

But due to some technical difficulties, our screening time was moved to 9:30pm, and so we opted to watch it later instead because hubby still has to work early today.

Caption: Sorry, I didn’t get good pictures. I don’t want to be caught in the throng because I was protecting my tummy.
The celebrities were chatting with the people around, because these are mostly people that they knew. Such is the treatment of celebs here in Bacolod. People are curious and wanted pictures, but they would rather be friendly.

But when we went to the office of Smart Communications, we heard shrieks outside, and we looked out to see what the raucous was about. A throng of about 20 girls from Bago City College (they were in uniform) saw Christian Vasquez and screamed. Oh well, so much for dignity.

Anyway, Christian may often be seen around the city because he hails from here. I know his uncle, who was a former officemate of mine. I have been to their house and though we don’t know each other personally, I have seen him around University of St. La Salle when he was in high school with his then girlfriend who became his wife, and eventually his ex.

Oh well…I guess, that is what they say that the promdis are crazy over celebrities…hehe Will tell you more tomorrow after I have watched the film tonight.

Namets! is directed by Jay Abello and will be shown for a week at SM Cinema 3 (SM City Bacolod).
