There is something about sidewalks here in Bacolod City. They are filled–either with kiosks selling food, clothes, accessories, or plants, big pots, etc. So many things are going on in our side walks here and nothing is being done about it.
So much so that people opt to use the side of the streets instead of the sidewalks (they were meant for pedestrians right?).
Anyway, such is our life here in quaint old Bacolod City. I just wish there is more order around here.
Actually, I don’t really know what my reaction should be.
For safety’s sake, I would want cleared sidewalks. Sidewalks are for pedestrians to walk on and be safe from vehicles.
However, I do feel sorry for the vendors. Earning a living is not easy. I don’t think these vendors have other options if they will be removed from the sidewalks. If we relocate them, I don’t think their usual customers would intentionally go to where they are. These vendors can earn better because of convenience. Passersby sometimes buy at impulse upon seeing the merchandise these vendors sell. Out of convenience these passersby would rather buy where they frequently walk by. And moreover I think they don’t pay rent. Is there anybody who will provide them a place to sell where they don’t have to pay rent? Or if they will be asked to pay rent, the rent will be very minimal.
As for the plants, maybe if we have bigger sidewalks these plants and the big pots they are in would be welcomed. I’m all for plants to beautify the city. For me a city without plants within looks ugly.
But I definitely would want the stores to clear the sidewalks of their merchandise.
