Cocolife Scam?

Yesterday I got a text from a certain Mr. Winnie Katindig of United Coconut Planters Life Assurance Corporation in Ayala Makati Branch. The text message said that it was my final notification that I have three exclusive rewards and privileges with their office. If am still interested I can claim my reward if I call within 48 hours.

I do get these text messages from time to time and sometimes I would call the number, not really with the intention of claiming the money, but really so that I can find a way to stop these scammers from conning other people. Anyway, the numbers in the text message are:

(02) 4859239, (02) 3939399, (02) 3939449, and (02) 3939454

I called the last number and it rang. It was answered by a guy and said it was the office of United Coconut Planters Life Assurance Corporation. Mr. Katindig was not available to take my call as he was on the other line. So the guy talked to me. He asked what my name was and so I gave him a pseudonym. Nevertheless, he said that in I have 3 rewards and the first one is a fully paid insurance policy and all I needed was to give them the name of my beneficiaries. I had two more rewards but the guy was really taking so much of my time (much like the sellers of Grollier’s Encyclopedia) so I hang up or else my phone bill would really shoot up.

Anyway, they seem like a legit company. It felt like calling a call center. But imagine that. I didn’t know what the other rewards were. But there was a catch there somehow. And even though I only gave a pseudonym without really spelling it out to him, he said I already had a contract with their company. He also asked me if how many messages I got before calling and so I said just one. He asked with surprise “So hindi niyo pa po natatanggap ang mga unang rewards niyo?” This guy is really convinced of what he was doing.

I am writing this to warn others not to fall for this trap. Please do not believe if you get a text message about rewards from United Coconut Planters Life Assurance Corporation. I know what my insurance policies are and their benefits. So if you don’t have a policy with that company, most likely it is a scam.

So I looked up the company in the internet and found the real McCoy at Cocolife. Here are the real contact information of Cocolife.

  1. this is not a scam unless you were not invited to come to their office for confirmation. if you were given an activation code for your certificate to be done on the very office, then it’s actually a good blessing for you. i myself had gone there and the office is there. Silliman University wouldn’t have allowed this business entity to installed within the vicinity if all their operations are scam and illegal, right?

  2. Hi! Thanks for this. I got a call myself and actually went to their office which was on top of a UCPB Branch. I am very interested myself in getting an insurance and was going to research on the best plan from what I think would be the best company to get it from. And I just happened to get a call from these people. I’m wary. They might actually be legit. But of course I have to know for sure before handing them a check, right? Thanks for the info and I’ll be sure to check with the head office. Thanks a lot.

  3. Hello,

It’s not a scam, it’s just their marketing strategy or Modus Operandi, as you may call it. Offering you rewards then when you are in the office they force you in buying or availing their products. It may be good, but who are they to judge you with what you do with your money. They do it similar to Multi-Level-Marketing wherein your friends bring you some office you don’t know then finding out it’s a presentation of the product already.

  4. Guys if you ever walk in cocolife insurance located in MOA be aware because they will pressure you and force you until you give up and end up availing with the lame ass insurances, Hindi ka nila talaga pakakawalan. Kung ayaw nyong mawalan ng 23k sa credit card nyo, pag hinila kayo ng ISA man sa kanila, sabihin nyo di umbra sakin ang “high pressure techniques” nyo, irereport ko to Kay tulfo.

  5. hei, i was a victim also of this from moa, i was forced, talagang nagbitiw ako ng 20,000. is there any possible way pa kaya to withdraw my money? nanghihinayang talaga ako..

  6. nabiktima din ako sa cebu. beware of COCOLIFE insurance. mag text sila or call na nanalo ka ng educational plan kasi good credit card payor ka daw tapos pagpumunta ka sa office nila eche-check daw yung credit card mo tapos swipe na kaagad hanggang maubos yung limit mo. sana matulungan ako dito paano mabawi yung pera ko kasi sabi nila mayroon daw akong pinirmahan na contract na nonrefundable. pero mayroon akong nabasa about insurance principle na dapat in utmost good faith both parties. gusto ko lang malaman anong dapat gawin ko dito.

  7. ako rin kanina sa MOA. Bwiset. But I guess totoo naman na may life insurance talaga sila. talagang hindi lang tama yung nanghi-hypnotize sila para lang makabenta ng insurance.

  8. Same here in Cebu City. They used high-pressured techniques so you will avail there insurances/plans. I try to use their reward certificate but all of them are useless.

  12. Hi guys, ngeon lng aq ngkaroon ng idea regarding sa COCOLife… S***!!!! last September 10, 2011 at MOA we’re going to SMX Convention for wedding fair.. hinarang kme ng isang lalake but he’s a gay n my ioffer na 20k personal insurance for FREE… den they offered us n ivail n un kc for that day lng he’s so makulit so pumayag n my fiancee … my pinafill up giving our info… so of course nfilled up kme.. den sabi nung gay w8 for 15mins pra mprint ung certificate den pinapasok kme sa loob den my representative n kumausap smen individually… i have no ideas of these things.. den they asked me if wat bank i have so i said only my debit card.. i dont have any credit card then they ask me y sbi q nlng ayako mgavail ng credit card kc mhrap mbaon sa utang… den sabi nila good things parehas tau…. ayun they offered me alot of things mgavail daw kme sa promo nila.. etc… so sbi q next tym nlng… buti nlng wla cla nkuha na money from me.. but the saddest thing is they got my personal info and also my fiancee… i hope mk2long 2ng story q sa iba… pls be aware of this f****** insurance company w/ bad operations… my KARMA…. babalik din sa knla yan….

  13. yes it’s true that the cocolife located in MOA pressures u until u give in. that was happened to me a while ago. when i was going home, i suddenly thought why did i gave in. so many questions in my mind but they already had my “initial deposit”. can i still get back the money they swiped from my credit card?

  14. i am so sorry mia. i don’t have the answer to that. my parents came to my rescue. they were signalling frantically outside to let me out and so i stood up. the girl threatened me to sit down. but i didn’t. maybe you need to call them tomorrow.

  15. NAKU! this is my issue now! to let go my 23k or to pay another 23k and wait until 2013. gusto ko na sana i-withdraw kasi “savings” naman siya, kaso wala daw ako makukuha… :(

  16. ayayay! bakit walang makukuha?

  17. Can somebody please tell us if this is really legitimate, madami na kasi nabibiktima in case hindi. i also gave in, well because i wanted an insurance but it was too fast, feeling ko naloko ako. sana man lang kahit ganun ang marketing strategy, i will really get my policy. Is SM north aware of this scheme?

  18. di ko rin nga alam e. but they have been in business for a long time. the thing is, that is their strategy people to sign up. as for me, i just think that in everything that we put money on, we have the right to think it over muna. just like club astoria. i dont like the thought of not being able to think it over before signing up for anything.

  19. Hi! Same thing happened to me january 2010. I received the billing statement for my policy this year. But I’m thinking twice if I’ll continue the policy or not.

  20. I was also a victim of this modus operandi, I can’t believed that it happened to me. I want to be a responsible citizen, I hope theres a way to end this unfair bullshit stuff! I don’t know how they are being trained by their company COCOLIFE! I wish they could make a way for this!
COCOLIFE PLEASE…. be responsible for your own agents or your company! If people want to have an insurance they will voluntarily come to your office, not by cornering or forcing an innocent one.
God bless! Please do something about it or somebody else will do it for you the way you may never want it!!!

  21. hi, I have the same experienced… it happened last Sunday, Feb. 6, 2012… We went to SM Calamba, this guy approached me and ask if a have a credit card I said none… I don’t usually entertain this kind of ‘promo’ but this guy is so persistent… we went to their office, they ask me to wait for my certificate (accident insurance of 20k and)… while waiting for the certificate a girl approached me and ask if a have an ATM or any IDs with me… she saw my visa card and asked my credit limit… what they offer is actually not an insurance but an investment… she showed me sample computation if I can save 100,000… (for ten years) on the 10th yr I’ll be receiving 1% of the amount (per annum) until 19th yr… but on the 20th yr. I’ll be receiving 50% of the savings.. I did not wait her to finished explaining… I just told her that I don’t have enough budget to grab that opportunity… and also my kids are waiting for me outside… hope this will help you… let’s not entertain them so they would stop… thanks and God bless!
