Vote for AID Foundation in the BBC World Challenge

Bacolod based NGO AID Foundation, Inc. (AIDFI) is one of the 12 finalists in the BBC World Challenge for its Hydraulic Ram Pump. The World Challenge is an international competition aimed at finding “projects or small businesses from around the world that have shown enterprise and innovation at the grassroots level”.

The Hydraulic Ram Pump was chosen among others from the 800 entries around the world. Without electricity and fuel and relying only on gravity, the ram pump makes use of energy contained in falling water through conversion of velocity of water to pressure in order to pump a portion of the water to a great height. Although the Ram Pump is not a new technology, AIDFI modified it and made it more efficient. AIDFI has already been installed in 170 upland communities benefiting around 50,000 people.

Voting is until November 11, 2010 so let’s all help AID Foundation win the award by voting and campaigning for them. Click the image below to vote for AID Foundation.

Need More Space

Living in a one-room area in a commercial building, we don’t really have a lot of space. Along the corridors of my in-laws’ home are boxes filled with stuff. We just have so much stuff and so little space.

Anyway, with our growing baby, she also has growing needs. Toys, books, and her stuff are all over the place. Of course, we have to acquire these things for her training and development, but it is still amassing things and taking up space.

How I wish we can have a home of our own with ample space, a garden, and storage room. For now, a new house (or even a rented one) is not within our reach. We are prioritizing our money for our daughter’s future as well as her stimulating toys and books. Those are our priorities. And of course, her health. We buy supplements and her milk is top of the line. This is where our money goes. So for now, we stay with our parents in law. :-D

You know what? Storage Barking is a new concept for me. I never knew there is such a thing as a place where you can store your stuff and it is for the use of the public. I mean you can store your stuff safely and for a fee, but it is secure. I just wonder though if there is something like that where I am. I know of safety deposit boxes in banks where you can store jewelry, but common household items? That I don’t know.

Anyway, for now, we control our acquisition and take out what is not being used so as not to take up space. :-D

Thinking About Online College Courses?

If there’s one thing that’s a good idea in this troubling economy, it’s schooling. Education has always been important, but it matters even more right now. So many people just can’t find work, so they’re returning to school instead. If you want to do that but you don’t have the time, consider what so many students are doing – taking online college courses. That way you’re home when you need to be (for kids, your spouse, or just because it’s less expensive that way) and you can still get an education. There are lots of accredited schools out there that offer degrees completely online.

You don’t have to worry about being somewhere else at a certain time each day, and you don’t have to spend the money to commute, get lunch, put gas in the car, and do all kinds of other things. You can sit at home and learn in your pajamas if you want to. Just make sure you get a good school that’s accredited and that offers your entire degree program online, so you won’t have any surprises later. You don’t want to get partway through and then realize that there’s a serious problem with your educational choices.

In short, life is what you make of it – and making time for education can open up a lot of doors for you in the future. When you can learn online it helps you in a lot of ways. You can be there for your family and still take care of your home, all while learning what you need to get ahead in life. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you can’t do it, or that you’re not important enough to do it. Your life is important and your time is valuable. Move forward with the things you want to do and see how far you can go.
